Palm with Linux at Las Vegas Show

One of the highlights of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) just ending in Las Vegas is Palm’s offering of its WebOS for mobile devices. A fitting name for its coming attraction in mid-2009 that uses this OS is the Palm Pre, to be offered exclusively through Sprint.

HP’s Mini 1000 Mi up for order

That magical “Mi” shell for Ubuntu that HP’s built for its new Mini 1000 netbooks is now available for order (as rumored), with configurations starting at $330 for the 9-inch version. Since it’s a custom build, it’ll take about nine days to ship, but the gift of commercialized open source is forever. Palm’s new Nova smartphone will need to make an impact

Palm is expected to announce a new smart phone with “amazing” new software on Thursday, but the new hardware and new Linux-based Nova operating system will need to make a big impact. The company used to dominate the PDA market, and its Treo phone was a success, but it’s now trailing badly. As SF Gate points out: “In its most recent quarter, Palm sold 599,000 smart phones, down 13% from the previous year. Apple, meanwhile, sold 6.9 million iPhones in its most recent quarter, while RIM shipped 6.7 million BlackBerrys.”

25C3: Severe Vulnerabilities in SSL and SSH

The last day of the four-day 25C3 congress in Berlin ended with an edge of suspense. In keeping with the theme of the congress, speakers had “nothing to hide” about well-known and new vulnerabilities in two of the most important Internet security protocols, SSH and SSL.
